Theatre company San stages 'Jjambbong', a black comedy imagining the 5·18 Democratic Uprising beginning over a bowl of jjambbong (spicy Korean-Chinese noodle soup). Running July 23–Aug 2 at Theater Qum in Jongno, Seoul, the play follows a zany Chinese restaurant delivery mix-up that spirals into historical tragedy, blending humor and satire to convey ordinary people’s fear and confusion amid political turmoil. First premiered in 2004, the piece remains a staple in San’s repertoire for 22 years. The new season features actor Kim Won-hae as Chinese restaurant owner Sin Jak-ro alongside veteran and emerging company members; director Yoon Jeong-hwan says the production aims not only to remember the past but to prompt audiences to reflect on today's society after leaving the theatre.
