Stage Designer Kim Hyun-jung Shapes Carmen with Busan Sea and Sky

Kim Hyun-jung, a renowned stage designer and former art director of the National Opera, created an outdoor set for Bizet’s Carmen on a special stage at Busan’s North Port (Bukhang) landmark site for performances on Nov 11–12. Aiming to integrate the sea, sky and city skyline as part of the set, she designed a predominantly red world—flowing red fabrics, a maze-like red path, bullring-like steps and weathered Spanish-style stone walls—to evoke passion, sensuality, rebellion and tragic fate (reference to the bullring and its symbolism). Working outdoors posed visual and acoustic challenges she turned into elements of the production, and she hopes the event will help develop Busan’s performing arts scene.
