Artists Explore Life’s Cycles Through Cells, Plants and Myth

Two solo shows in Seoul examine humans as part of larger living systems. Ethiopian-born Merikecep Berhanu’s Asia debut “Memory of Cells” at Esther Schipper uses cells as a starting point to connect biological and cultural memory. Paintings pair cell-like round forms, sprouting plants, hands and neural circuits to suggest an ecosystem of accumulated experience and migration. At Perrotin Seoul, German artist Vivian Greven’s “In Bloom” focuses on transformation, reworking Greek and Roman myths to capture moments when humans become other beings—water spirits, or Daphne turning into a tree—often blending lush flowers with skin that reads as both living flesh and cold marble. Berhanu’s show runs through Aug. 14; Greven’s through Aug. 19.
