Daegu Mayor Pushes for National Musical Complex to Make City a Global Musical Hub

Daegu Mayor Chu Kyung-ho urged the national government to support building a National Musical Complex to help transform Daegu into a world-class musical city. Speaking at the closing awards of the 20th Daegu International Musical Festival (DIMF), an Asia‑only international musical festival that has promoted original Korean musicals and global exchange, he thanked participants and highlighted the city’s role in fostering homegrown productions. He noted that musicals account for about 30% of domestic performance market sales but that overseas licensed shows still make up roughly half, underscoring the need for government backing to boost competitiveness. Mayor Chu met Culture Minister Choi Hui-young to request support not only for the musical complex but also for a National Museum of Modern Art and hosting the National Opera Company in Daegu, tying these projects to national cultural strategy and presidential regional pledges.
