K-People: Silent Persistence — A Photo Retrospective of 80 Years in Daegu

Maeil Newspaper marks its 80th anniversary with a special photo exhibition, “K-People: The Great Koreans of Quiet Persistence,” running Aug 11–23 at Daegu Culture & Arts Center. About 400 items — historic photos and newspaper pages from the paper’s archives — are shown in 11 themed sections covering Korea’s modern journey: liberation (1945), government founding (1948), wartime relocation when Daegu served as the temporary capital (1950), the devastating 1959 Typhoon Sarah, the vibrant mass politics of the 1960 elections and April 19 Revolution, and the everyday struggles of the 1960s like the “barley hump” famine period. The selection focuses on pivotal Daegu–Gyeongbuk (Gyeongsangbuk-do) sites that played central roles in Korea’s recent history, documenting the people and moments that shaped today’s nation.
