A special photo exhibition marking the 80th anniversary of the Maeil Newspaper runs Aug 11–23 at Daegu Culture & Arts Center, showcasing 400 photographs across 11 themed sections that capture pivotal moments in recent Korean history. Highlights include the 1998 gold-collection drive to repay IMF debt, the street celebration culture around the 2006 and 2002 World Cup matches, the 2011 Daegu World Championships that raised the city’s global profile, and Daegu’s frontline role in early 2020 COVID-19 response (K‑quarantine) with drive-through testing and volunteer medical teams. The show also features renewable energy projects like the 2021 Hapcheon Dam floating solar farm, 2025 milestones such as Gyeongju hosting the APEC summit and Yeongilman Port’s emergence as a forward base for Arctic shipping routes, and 2026 demonstrations of Level‑4 autonomous shuttles as Daegu pursues an AI‑robot hub strategy with five targeted high-tech industries.
