An exhibition of Robert Mapplethorpe (1946–1989), titled “The Poetics of Form,” is on view at International Gallery’s hanok (traditional Korean house) space from June 9 to July 19, 2026. Moving beyond his earlier reputation for provocative, erotic imagery linked to punk and BDSM, the show emphasizes still lifes, silhouettes and sculptural portraiture that reveal subjects at moments of fullest intensity. Using stark black-and-white contrast and meticulously controlled natural light, Mapplethorpe treated photography like carving—shaping forms so the essence of flowers, waves and bodies appears at its most “charged.” Critics call this paradoxical approach “hot classicism”: classical compositional order that contains vulnerable, often marginalized bodies (including nude Black men and gender-fluid figures), creating tension between strict form and erupting desire. Works such as Thomas and Calla Lily present idealized, mythic forms where social identity is transformed into universal presence. Recurrent motifs—eggs, feathers, vases, flowers—play out a rhythm of containment and release, reflecting the artist’s life between repression and liberation. The exhibition asks viewers to look beyond assigned names and categories to the thing itself, and suggests that Mapplethorpe’s legacy endures because his formal rigor changes how we see the world.
