Salmonella Risk Rises in July: Be Careful with Eggs

With the monsoon season starting, higher temperature and humidity in July raise the risk of foodborne illness, especially from Salmonella. Salmonella—now the leading cause of food poisoning in 2024—often spreads from chickens and eggs when bacteria on shells contaminate egg contents or via cross-contamination with hands and utensils. Cracked or damaged eggs should be avoided and refrigerated soon after purchase. Do not wash eggs before storage (washing can remove the protective bloom); if needed, rinse just before use. Because Salmonella is heat-sensitive, fully cook eggs (no runny yolks) and vulnerable people (children, elderly) should avoid soft-boiled or runny eggs. Maintain strict hand hygiene—wash with soap under running water for at least 30 seconds—especially after restroom use and before food prep.
