Yoon Byul, founder and artistic director of the Yoon Byul Ballet Company, says she wants to make ballet less intimidating and attract general audiences. Launched in 2022 and described as a “ballet startup,” the company gained attention with the production God (갓) — created with about 80 million won including Yoon’s own wedding fund and 29 million won in public support — which drew praise at home and abroad for blending Korean traditional hat (gat) imagery with ballet. Faced with tight budgets covering dancers, lighting, music and rehearsals, Yoon compares big national companies to Samsung Electronics and argues there’s room for smaller companies to thrive by focusing on creative, high-quality productions rather than big budgets. She remains active as a dancer while personally overseeing production, design and promotion, determined to balance artistry and sustainable management so her dancers can continue performing.
