Koreans Win Top Honors at Moscow International Ballet Competition for First Time

At the 15th Moscow International Ballet Competition in the Bolshoi Theatre, Koreans achieved a historic sweep of senior first-place awards. Lee Kang-won (21) and Kim Min-jin (20) each won gold in the senior duet category after performing pas de deux from La Esmeralda and Swan Lake. In addition, Park Keun-byul-bit (15) won the junior male solo gold—the first time a Korean has taken that title. The quadrennial Moscow competition is one of the world’s most prestigious ballet contests (often compared with Lausanne and the Jackson competitions) and is known for strict judging and limited age-based entry (junior 14–18, senior 19–27). Korean winners have already attracted offers from leading ballet companies, and commentators said the results marked a milestone for Korean ballet on the global stage.
