Gyeonggi Performing Arts Awards Launch Local Culture Recycling with First Winners

The inaugural Gyeonggi Performing Arts Awards, held during the G-ARTS Festival, selected six winners from 227 applicants across dance, theatre, and music to promote a virtuous cycle of regional arts: discovering strong works, connecting them with local venues, and returning cultural benefits to residents. After document and video screening rounds, finalists performed in six Gyeonggi venues in May–June; judging combined expert panels, venue staff, and citizen evaluators. The grand prize went to Mahola Company for contemporary work rooted in Korean dance, while five teams received top honors across music, theatre, and dance — including Ensemble Hadam, Groove& (a female percussion ensemble based on traditional materials), and companies reworking traditional puppet and folk forms. Organizers aim for the awards to strengthen creation, improve distribution, and offer feedback to help artists grow; judges suggested adding category prizes (e.g., best script, direction, choreography) to highlight more achievements.
