South Korea Sends Mackerel Envoy to Secure 2,000 Tons as Seafood Prices Rise

South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries is dispatching a ‘mackerel special envoy’ of public and private experts to Norway and other suppliers from July 6–17 to negotiate and secure about 2,000 tons of Norwegian mackerel amid rising seafood prices. Norway’s reduced catch quotas and higher global raw-material prices have cut exports to Korea, so the mission will also seek new suppliers such as the UK and the Faroe Islands (페로제도) to diversify import sources. The government will directly buy imported fish and coordinate with retailers to lower consumer prices, and will run a nationwide three-week seafood discount event (July 8–28) across 24 major offline supermarkets offering up to 50% off all seafood items. Officials said the measures—import deals, direct purchasing, stockpiling, and large-scale discounts—aim to quickly ease household grocery burdens and stabilize market prices.
