Why 'Tiny Beers' Are Making a Comeback in the U.S.

U.S. brewers are reintroducing small-format cans and bottles known as "pony" beers (7–9 oz / 198–255 ml) as consumers shift toward lower alcohol intake and seek quicker, colder sips in extreme heat. Pony beers date back to the late 19th century and saw earlier popularity in mid-20th century, but recent demand is linked to wider use of weight-loss medications like Wegovy (GLP-1 drugs) that encourage reduced drinking, and to climate-driven preferences for drinks that stay cold. Brewers and distributors say pony beers appeal to parents who want a single drink while caring for children and to people on diets who want a small, satisfying treat. Although major brands are launching pony lines, the segment remains small within the overall beer market even as companies eye it as a growth opportunity amid a slight decline in total U.S. beer shipments.
