Summer Becomes 'Ballet Season' as Korean Stars Return Home

Korean ballet stars based at top international companies are returning to perform in Korea this summer, making it a full-fledged "ballet season." Leading names include Mariinsky principal Kim Kimin, Mariinsky first soloist Jeon Mincheol, Paris Opera Ballet étoile (star) Park Se-eun, and English National Ballet lead principal Lee Sang-eun. Jeon stars in a new production of The Little Mermaid (based on Andersen) and will also dance in Swan Lake with Universal Ballet. Several gala programs — showcasing classical grand pas de deux and contemporary works — are scheduled across Seoul and other cities, featuring rising talents like Yeom Dayeon and Park Yoonjae alongside international guests. Major events include Park Se-eun’s expanded Paris Opera Ballet étoile gala, the long-running “Korean Stars Abroad” reunion series, Korea National University of Arts (K-ARTS) Dance School’s 30th anniversary gala with alumni appearances, K-Ballet World moved to August with its World Ballet Stars Gala, and contemporary double bills such as Seoul City Ballet’s Death and the Maiden. The season mixes classical highlights, contemporary repertoire, and premieres by Korean choreographers, promising packed houses and star-studded programs.
