Gangwon's beaches reopen for summer with stronger safety, extended hours and new attractions

Gangwon Province is launching its summer beach season with enhanced safety measures, later evening hours and a wider range of attractions to draw visitors. Popular beaches in Sokcho (Sokcho Beach, Deungdae, Oeongchi and the new Cheongho Beach) began a 52-day season through Aug. 23, with shark- and jellyfish-prevention nets and emergency medical centers in place. Lifeguards, more rescue equipment and joint emergency drills are being deployed across the coast after recent shark bycatch incidents. Sokcho Beach will allow swimming until 9 p.m. (July 21–Aug. 12) and host a large beachside media art installation; Gangneung’s Gyeongpo Beach opens with a drone rescue demonstration, a giant waterslide and modular seawater pool. Cities will run festivals, a silent DJ party (music through wireless headphones), beer and camping events, and standardize pricing while cracking down on illegal tents and price gouging. Environmental tests show water and sand quality meet safety standards. Officials hope these measures and attractions will make Gangwon’s east coast a safer, livelier summer destination and boost returning visitors.
