Records of Korea’s First Private Arboretum, Chollipo, Registered as National Heritage

The ‘Records Related to the Establishment of Taean Chollipo Arboretum’ (56 items) were officially registered as a national registered cultural heritage on July 2 after a two-year review. The files, compiled by founder Min Byung-gal (Cal P. Miller, 1921–2002), include land purchase documents, planting and maintenance logs, plant collection records, and correspondence with overseas partners, documenting the arboretum’s creation and operation from 1962 to 1989. Chollipo Arboretum, recognized as Korea’s first private arboretum, began with a 9,000 m² coastal land purchase in 1962 and expanded into about 589,000 m² hosting 16,000 plant species. The registration process faced delays and a year-long reexamination over record details before approval in this year’s rehearing. (Chollipo: the name of the arboretum in Taean, Chungcheongnam-do)
