Gangwon Province’s incoming administration transition team has decided to proceed with the Seoraksan Osaek cable car (Osaek Cable Car) project without major changes. During a briefing, the team said it reviewed five priority areas—organizational reform, a dedicated global export center, new government complex plans, creation of a local semiconductor ecosystem, and an AI-focused industrial strategy including the cable car. While progress will continue, environmental and local impact concerns will be examined through legal procedures. Local environmental groups have repeatedly urged a full re-evaluation of the cable car’s feasibility. The transition team also plans to expand the provincial economic promotion agency to manage export support after deciding that setting up a separate institute would take too long. Existing semiconductor initiatives from the previous administration will be kept as a growth engine but aligned more closely with the incoming administration’s AI data center plans to create jobs and attract young talent. The transition team will finalize policy recommendations to Governor-elect Woo Sang-ho before ending activities on the 10th.
