Taebaek, a highland city in Gangwon Province, is marketing itself this summer as "the coolest city in South Korea" to attract visitors. With an average elevation of about 900m (compared with Namsan in Seoul at 270m), the city emphasizes its comparatively low temperatures and absence of tropical nights even during last year’s heat waves. Taebaek plans stay-centric tourism linking nature, culture and night activities: a "Cool Cinema Festival" outdoor movie series from July 24, the 11th Han River–Nakdong River Headwaters Festival from July 25, and night‑time programs to boost evening tourism. Key natural attractions include Yongyeon Cave (internal temperatures of 9–10°C), Biwaya Waterfall (which is spectacular after rain), and Highland Healing Camping (a forest rest area). The city hopes its cool climate and festival lineup will draw visitors seeking comfortable and unique summer getaways.
