Major Concept Art Shows Headline Seoul’s Fall Exhibition Lineup

Damien Hirst’s blockbuster show at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), Seoul, closed after a record 540,000 visitors in the first half of the year. Other popular shows included Tino Sehgal’s performance exhibition at the Leeum Museum, which drew about 90,000 visitors despite the artist’s anti-photo stance. Big exhibitions are lined up for the second half in Seoul: MMCA will host a solo show by Seoul-based Korean artist Do Ho Suh (known for his mosquito-net fabric houses) starting in August; the Leeum will stage a September solo exhibition by Korea-born, Europe-based Koo Jeong A, presenting her conceptual world “OUSSS” with works placed in unexpected spots around the museum; and the Amorepacific Museum of Art will hold the first Korean solo show of American conceptual artist Sol LeWitt (pioneer of “wall drawings,” a form where he issued instructions and others executed the murals). With major private museums programming conceptual art shows alongside MMCA’s thematic exhibition “This Is (Not) Conceptual Art,” Korea’s art scene is expected to buzz around conceptual art this fall. Additionally, Seoul’s art calendar includes a large retrospective for the late German painter Georg Baselitz at the Sehwa Museum of Art and the Asian retrospective of documentary photographer Martin Parr at the Seoul Museum of Photography starting July 16.
