Finding Calm in Chaotic Visions: Lee Geun-min’s ‘Before It Becomes a Scene’

Artist Lee Geun-min’s solo show ‘Before It Becomes a Scene’ at PKM Gallery in Samcheong-dong presents 23 recent works, including a three-meter painting, that translate the artist’s hallucinations into visceral canvases. Trained in Western painting at Seoul National University, Lee depicts muscle, organs and blood-like forms inspired by fragmented visual residues from mental illness (borderline personality disorder). He began using hallucinations as material after earlier struggles with an eating disorder and vivid, disturbing visions. Working spontaneously—likening his process to cell division—Lee reconstructs memories rather than imposing a predetermined composition. He does not claim shock for its own sake; instead he invites viewers to confront uncomfortable emotions and seek the deeper message behind them. The exhibition runs through the 25th.
