The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) and Korea Tourism Organization have launched the “100×100 Project,” a nationwide public voting campaign to identify 100 themes and 100 places per theme—totaling 10,000 hotspots—across South Korea. From June 29 to July 10, citizens can vote via government tourism websites to select local attractions nominated by 100 travel experts who helped define the 100 themes. The project groups themes into eight broad categories including food, nature/ecology, experiences, lifestyle, K-content, culture/arts/tradition, architecture, and travel tastes. Creative theme examples include “gukbap and hangover soups 100,” “barefoot walking 100,” “K-pop pilgrimage 100,” “vintage fashion spots 100,” and “my personal winter wonderland 100.” For eight themes with fewer than 100 candidates, the public may directly recommend sites (e.g., “places in songs 100,” “emotional train stations 100,” “Jeju oreum 100”). After voting, the selected 10,000 sites will be published on the national tourism website and promoted with events and collectible rewards to encourage visits. The project, personally proposed by Minister Choi Hwi-young, aims to reveal lesser-known local attractions, diversify travel options beyond Seoul, and attract foreign visitors by highlighting niche interests.
