After one year as CEO, Go Young-geun of the Mapo Cultural Foundation has focused on making the venue both artist-friendly and inviting for residents. He renovated underused spaces (gallery Mac, outdoor plaza, terrace) to create everyday cultural resting spots and introduced regular programs such as a monthly ‘MAC Morning Concert’ (matinée) and a Tuesday humanities lecture series to lower barriers to the arts. The foundation strengthened indie music and theater: the ‘Indi-Discovery Challenge’ supported 24 indie acts this year with 523 applicants and partnered with CJ ENM for recording/distribution; Mapo also hosted ‘Yeonghee Festival’ (a women musicians–centered festival) and co-produced new plays like ‘Tooshin’ while nurturing resident troupe Gongnori Club and the small PlayMac theater as creative hubs. Going forward, Go aims to build “Mapo-branded” seasonal series, book and craft festivals, and a collaborative culture that makes artists want to perform here—describing his leadership as gardener- or farmer-like, cultivating long-term growth.
