South Korea’s government and major conglomerates Samsung and SK will announce historic, large-scale regional investments aimed at building an AI ecosystem linking Honam (Southwest), Chungcheong (Central), and Yeongnam (Southeast) regions. Plans include a Honam semiconductor cluster (호남 반도체 클러스터), Chungcheong data centers, and AI-focused manufacturing upgrades in Yeongnam. Reports suggest the Honam cluster investment could reach as high as 1,000 trillion won, prompting public debate about the figures. President Lee and senior ministers publicly defended the projects’ necessity, saying they will accelerate AI capabilities nationwide and encourage further private investment. The announcements will be made at a national “mega project” briefing attended by Samsung and SK leaders, and may include site and campus-specific commitments in Asan/Cheonan (충청) and Gumi (영남). Conservatives have criticized the scale and politics of the spending, but government and industry leaders emphasize regional energy/resource readiness and the strategic importance of domestic semiconductor and data infrastructure for Korea’s AI ambitions.
