Yura Yang (36), a Korean conductor, has been named General Music Director of the Saarland State Theater (Saarbrücken) in southwest Germany, the first woman appointed to the post since the theater opened in 1897. This also marks the first time a Korean conductor will hold the top musical leadership role at a German opera house, overseeing musical direction and orchestra management from the 2027–28 season through 2030/31. Yang credited earlier female conductors for paving the way and emphasized her desire to expand opportunities for younger colleagues. She previously broke ground as the first female principal conductor (Kapellmeister) at theaters in Aachen, Karlsruhe and Leipzig, and served as a guest conductor for symphony concerts in Saarbrücken before being offered the permanent post. Yang stresses the importance of balance in opera as a Gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art), where orchestra, singers, directors and contemporary messaging must move as one; she actively collaborates with directors to reinterpret classic works for modern audiences.
