Korean Play Exploring Vision and Hearing Heads to Chemnitz Festival

The National Theater of Korea's new play, "You Can't See Me — Except for That" (당신이 날 볼 수 없다는 것만 빼면), directed by Jeong Se-young, will be performed at Germany's largest performing arts festival in Chemnitz on June 2–3. The experimental piece, developed through the theater's "Creation Track 180˚" program under the project name "Retreat of the Vanishing Point," questions who observes and how perception operates. The production features an unseen "invisible man" who is described but not visible, and a visible ghost covered in white cloth who is treated as absent, creating deliberate confusion between seeing and knowing. The staging also disrupts hearing: familiar pop songs (originally by K-pop group Fin.K.L) are suggested by captions so audiences mentally recall melodies; for the German run, a local popular song will be used instead. Director Jeong says the goal is to evoke imagination in the audience’s mind rather than show everything, probing power dynamics tied to the idea of a vanishing point (소실점).
