Samsung and SK are set to unveil their largest-ever domestic investment plans on the 29th, aiming to create an AI industry ecosystem linking Honam, Chungcheong, and Yeongnam regions. Plans include a massive Honam semiconductor cluster, data centers in Chungcheong, and physical AI (physical AI) investments in Yeongnam. Semiconductor spending alone could reach hundreds of trillions of won, with total investments approaching 1,000 trillion won. The announcement will be made at a presidential-led national report; top executives including Samsung’s Lee Jae-yong and SK’s Chey Tae-won will attend. Companies plan sector-focused investments: end-to-end semiconductor facilities in Honam, OLED and next-gen display expansion and battery capacity growth in Chungcheong, and AI-driven manufacturing upgrades in Yeongnam. SK is also planning ultra-large data centers with Amazon Web Services in Ulsan and up to five domestic data-center sites. Large-scale data centers will drive major power-infrastructure investment (including small modular reactors (SMR), LNG, large nuclear, and renewables). Officials and industry leaders expect these coordinated investments to accelerate Korea’s transformation into a global AI hub.
