Conductor Yang Yura, 36, has been appointed Generalmusikdirektor (GMD) of the Saarländisches Staatstheater (Saarland State Theatre) in Saarbrücken, Germany, beginning August 2027 through the 2030/31 season. She becomes the first woman to hold the GMD post in the theatre’s history and the first Korean to be named GMD there. Yang has built her career through Germany’s traditional Kapellmeister path, serving in positions in Kiel, Aachen, Karlsruhe and Leipzig and working as a korepetitor (music coach) early on. Her dramatic return to the podium in 2024—conducting Verdi’s Aida just six weeks after giving birth—helped solidify her relationship with the Saarbrücken company, which later invited her back as guest conductor and then offered the GMD post via direct appointment (berufen). Yang thanked earlier women conductors for paving the way and said she hopes to expand opportunities for younger musicians. She plans to engage the local community with family and smaller concerts as part of her role. The European music world is watching her first season, with Yang citing Richard Strauss as a favorite composer and emphasizing opera as a “total art” requiring collaboration among singers, directors and orchestra.
