'Lights of France' Bring 20th-Century French Music to July Festival in Daehangno

The July Festival (July 1–31) returns to Daehangno (a Seoul theater district) organized by The House Concert, transforming the month into a classical music celebration centered at the Artists' House. Departing from its previous single-composer themes, the 2026 festival expands to a country-wide focus with “Lumières de France (Lights of France),” surveying 20th-century French composers from Debussy and Ravel to Messiaen, Satie, and members of Les Six. The July Festival Orchestra opens July 1 under conductor Park Kang-hyun with works including Debussy's Petite Suite and Ravel's Piano Concerto in G, featuring rising pianist Hong Seok-young; the finale on July 31, conducted by Park Geun-tae, highlights Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin with soloist Lee Kwan-wook. Piano and chamber series present in-depth Debussy and Ravel programs, while late-month events spotlight Olivier Messiaen—most notably Sonya Bach’s complete performance of Vingt regards sur l’enfant-Jésus and a quartet of Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time with noted Korean soloists. The festival features leading Korean and emerging artists across piano, strings, winds, and bassoon, plus weekly “Artist in Focus” sessions, mini-talks, and an “Open Session” dialogue on July 12. Originating as an intimate house-concert project in 2002, The House Concert now stages daily festival nights in July and for 2026 expands beyond Seoul to 9 regions with 24 venues, bringing the program to nationwide audiences.
