Survival and Layers: Kim Miro's 'Black Forest, Radiant Underside' Opens in Seoul

Seoul’s Pyo Gallery in Jahamun-ro presents Kim Miro’s solo exhibition 'Black Forest, Radiant Underside' from July 3 to August 1. The artist blends etching, collagraphy, silkscreen monotype and collage on Hanji (traditional Korean paper) to create unique, non-reproducible prints that reflect themes of survival, motherhood and artistic practice. Working between caregiving and studio time, Kim developed a layered printmaking process—cutting, overlapping and pasting—to turn fragmented daily life into repeated, accumulative visual language. Images of tulips, black calla lilies, tropical roses and both predators and herbivores explore camouflage, wounds and recovery; torn petals and overlaid forms reveal the “radiant underside” found after passing through the darkest woods. Kim studied printmaking at Hongik University and Seoul National University and has been recognized at international print biennales; her works are held in collections including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art’s art bank, the Government Art Bank, Japan’s Sakima Museum and the Plains Art Museum in the U.S.
