Screen Tourism Rises as K-Content Turns Filming Sites into Attractions

As global interest in K-content grows, film and drama locations in Korea are becoming popular tourist destinations in a trend called “screen tourism.” The Korea Tourism Organization recently signed an MOU with Studio Dragon to develop travel packages—such as linking Jeju Olle trails with drama locations—and K-drama experience programs for domestic and international visitors. Iconic sites from works like Winter Sonata, Goblin, and Extraordinary Attorney Woo have driven visitor increases, and even historical sites tied to story backgrounds (e.g., Cheongnyeongpo and Danjong’s tomb) saw explosive growth. Screen tourism boosts local economies through longer stays and more spending at nearby cafes, restaurants, and lodgings. Challenges remain: many sets face decline after a show’s popularity fades, and some locations have already been abandoned. Experts recommend building sustainable local attractions—unique branding, cultural and food experiences, and long-term promotional rights in filming contracts—to convert short-term fame into lasting tourism. The government and local authorities are encouraged to embed screen-tourism planning into production agreements and support international film shoots to sustain the sector’s growth.
