Sound as Architecture: Sonic Theater Connects Languages and Spaces

French sound artist Hemi Klemensevitz leads the opening work of Sync Next 26, “Wind Alone, Sand Alone Makes No Sound,” bringing Korean and French musicians together to create a ‘sonic theater.’ The piece unites diverse vocal and instrumental traditions—Korean court and folk music (guggeum, jeongga), medieval chant, and baroque instruments—plus spoken Korean and French, into layered sound chapters. Installations on stage are treated as playable instruments, and the theater itself (S Theater) is used as a resonant instrument: performers’ voices and instruments, audience breath and even HVAC noise become musical elements. Klemensevitz, who learned Korean while studying in Marseille and later based himself in Korea, has blended music and visual art across museums and dance collaborations; the show will also tour Ilmin Museum and venues in Paris and London.
