Korean theatres are staging a wave of productions adapted from films and well-known screen stories, using familiar plots to attract audiences with live, immersive performances. The Lives of Others, adapted from the 2006 German film, returns with high expectations after a successful Korean premiere. Dead Poets Society marks actor Cha In-pyo’s first time on stage; he and others will alternate as the inspiring teacher John Keating (키팅 선생). Disney’s Frozen musical, a blockbuster on Broadway and worldwide, brings 12 new songs by the original songwriters and 20 live numbers to Korean audiences. The cult dark comedy Heather (헤더스) is confirmed for a Korean premiere next year. Critics note the trend reflects market caution—producers favor low-risk, familiar properties amid economic pressure and shifts in creative talent and audience consumption toward new media like web novels.
