Revisiting Gong Seong-hoon's 1990s Experimental Art: 'Double Blind' Exhibition Opens

Kumho Museum of Art presents 'Double Blind,' a retrospective of late artist Gong Seong-hoon (1965–2021) running until July 19. The show gathers his early 1990s installations, drawings, video records, circuit diagrams and recreated pieces to re-examine the experimental practices that preceded his better-known nightscape paintings. Using contemporary technologies of the time—camera, projector, blind curtains, mechanical devices—Gong explored questions of perception and representation. The exhibition foregrounds process and archival materials (制作 매뉴얼: production manuals), and even treats conservation and remaking as part of the artwork, highlighting both historical context and contemporary relevance. Kumho aims to broaden understanding of Gong beyond his landscape painter image and to revisit the experimental spirit of 1990s Korean contemporary art.
