East Coast Photographer Jinsoo Lee Presents 'Stains of the Gaze' Solo Exhibition

Jinsoo Lee, a photographer known for documenting the lives of haenam (female and male sea divers/fishing people) on the East Coast—especially around Daejin Port in Goseong—shifts from coastal subjects to urban surfaces in a solo show titled 'Stains of the Gaze' at Maru Art Center, Insadong, Seoul (July 8–13). Building on his long-term documentary work preserving disappearing fishing-village culture, Lee explores the Lacanian concept of the 'gaze' (Jacques Lacan) to ask philosophical questions about perception and existence. The exhibition features 21 works made from urban stains, cracks and torn surfaces; Lee layered, erased and reworked images to add texture and reveal what he calls another reality (The Real) hidden beneath familiar scenes. Rather than asking what we see, the show aims to make viewers experience how they are seen by objects—turning blemishes into lures that disturb habitual ways of looking and invite reflection on the boundary between visible and invisible.
