Treasures Made from Yanggu Clay Return Home: 'Yi Seong-gye Votive White Porcelain' Displayed for First Time

Yanggu Baekja Museum opens a 20th anniversary special exhibition from June 27 to Sept 27 featuring over 100 white porcelain (baekja) pieces and modern ceramics. Highlighting the show are five national treasures—Yi Seong-gye votive white porcelains made in 1391 with inscriptions expressing hopes for the founding of Joseon. Crafted from Yanggu white clay by potter Sim-ryong (심룡) and once enshrined on Mt. Geumgang, these works are on public display outside the National Museum and in their production region for the first time in 635 years. The museum provides contextual displays about the artifacts’ history and significance, plus comparative regional baekja examples (e.g., Bunwon, Haeju, Cheongsong) and a contemporary ceramics section titled “2026 Summer of White Porcelain.” The opening ceremony on June 27 includes performances, exhibition tours, and a ribbon-cutting. Museum director Jeong Du-seop says the return of the votive porcelains symbolizes Yanggu’s heritage and Korea’s ceramic culture.
