hy will host the 19th International Scientific Symposium on July 1 at Daejeon Convention Center to commemorate the 50th anniversary of its central research institute. Returning after a 13-year break since 2013, this year’s theme is “Probiotics Beyond the Gut: Advancing Probiotics through Integrated Science and Technology.” The event, held as a session linked to the Korean Society of Food Science and Technology conference, will be chaired by Professor Kim Ji-yeon (Seoul National University of Science and Technology, Department of Food Engineering). Speakers include Professor Elad Tako (Cornell University), Professor Jun-ryul Heo (Harvard University), Professor Shin-hyuk Lim (POSTECH), and Hy’s New Growth Team leader Choi Il-dong. Presentations will cover strain-specific effects on gut function and the microbiome, immune benefits from clinical trials and microbiome analysis, and AI-based personalized probiotic approaches, emphasizing the “gut-organ axis” (theory linking gut microbiota to other body organs). hy’s research institute was founded in 1976 aiming to localize probiotic strains and after 20 years developed Korea-specific Bifidus strain HY8001; it now holds over 5,100 strains collected nationwide, the largest domestic collection. hy says the symposium aims to boost microbiome research competitiveness and contribute to public health.
