Self-Check Gender Impact Assessments to Be Applied at Pools and Beaches from Next Month

South Korea’s Ministry of Gender Equality and Family announced that from next month local governments must apply a self-diagnostic gender impact assessment to public water-play facilities and beaches. The checklist-style review will examine hiring practices for safety staff for gender bias, delivery of sexual harassment and assault prevention training, measures to prohibit and patrol for illicit filming, and installation of emergency bells in public restrooms. The gender impact assessment (an evaluation tool to ensure policies reflect gendered needs, balance participation, and challenge stereotypes) will be completed by facility managers using a standardized checklist, who must then prepare corrective measures. The minister said the move aims to make summer leisure sites safe and enjoyable for people of all genders and ages.
