South Korea’s inbound tourism is recovering strongly and the pattern is changing. In May 2026 foreign visitors reached about 1.95 million (131% of May 2019), while Korean outbound trips were only 97.5% of 2019 levels. China remains the largest source (563,600), but recovery rates are higher in Taiwan (188.4%), the U.S. (158.2%) and the Philippines (138.3%), showing growth beyond the traditional Chinese market. From January–May 2026 inbound arrivals totaled 8.72 million (125.2% of 2019), with notable increases from long‑haul regions: the Americas (+63.4% vs 2019) and Oceania (+69.2%). Asia’s share of total arrivals fell from 83.5% in 2019 to 81.0%, while the Americas and Europe rose. The shift means competition now focuses less on sheer visitor counts and more on which markets bring steady, higher‑spending, longer‑lasting tourists. (GCC: Gulf Cooperation Council)
