TV personality Park Mi-sun, who returned to broadcasting after breast cancer treatment, said she avoids charcoal-grilled meat (숯불구이) to reduce cancer risk. Since her diagnosis in December 2024 she changed her diet to focus on vegetables and fish, skipped processed meats like ham and sausages, and eats eggs, tomatoes and broccoli for breakfast. Medical experts warn that high-temperature grilling and charcoal smoke produce carcinogens: polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) including benzo[a]pyrene and heterocyclic amines (HCAs). These form when fat drips on hot coals and when amino acids and creatine are exposed to temperatures above 150°C, increasing risks of cancers such as breast, colorectal and stomach cancer. Experts recommend steaming or boiling meat, or using pans/griddles (철판) to grill with less smoke if needed.
