An Jung-geun Calligraphy Sells for 2.7 Billion KRW, New Record

A handwritten calligraphy (yumuk) by independence activist An Jung-geun (1879–1910), written in Lushun Prison shortly after his death sentence, sold for 270 million KRW (about 31.455 billion KRW including 16.5% buyer’s premium) at a K Auction sale. The piece, titled “Baekindangjungyutaehwa” (百忍堂中有泰和) meaning “In a house that endures a hundred times, peace and harmony dwell,” is part of a set designated as a national treasure (Treasure No. 569-1) in 1972 and dates to February 1910. The phrase originates from an anecdote in the Old Book of Tang (Gu Tang Shu) about practicing patience. The lot also included a printed copy of An’s 14 February 1910 death sentence from the Gwandong Provincial Court, an important historical document. The sale surpassed the previous record of 195 million KRW set in December 2023.
