Ivy, a veteran Korean musical actress who has played Roxy Hart in Korea for six seasons (nearly 600 performances), has been cast as the lead Roxy in the Broadway production of Chicago. She will perform at the Ambassador Theatre in New York from August 17 to September 6. After a year-long audition process triggered by a 2019 suggestion from Chicago’s producers, Ivy submitted multiple audition videos and worked intensively on pronunciation and accent training. Supported by her Korean production company (ShinC Company) and fellow artists, she recorded a final dramatic Roxy monologue with the help of a neighbor who assisted with piano accompaniment. The Broadway team praised her talent and dedication, and Ivy is now studying English rigorously with a team of nine native teachers to prepare for the role. She hopes her story—showing that one can achieve such chances even if not fluent in English, older, or not famous—will inspire others. Ivy’s goal is simply to earn reactions of “Not bad” while delivering the character’s lines and message faithfully. (Roxy Hart: the lead female role in the musical Chicago)
