Alexander Campbell (31) from Australia has walked over 20,000 km of his planned 40,000 km global trek, which began in Sydney on February 12, 2023. Over 1,177 days he passed through Southeast and South Asia, Central Asia, the Caucasus, Türkiye, and reached North Macedonia in Europe. He aims to finish the European leg by the end of 2026, then continue through Central America, the United States, and New Zealand before returning to Sydney; sea crossings are done by plane. Although he originally planned to complete the 40,000 km in four years, the journey will likely take longer. Highlights include trekking in Nepal (Gokyo Ri (5,357 m), Kongma La (5,540 m), and Everest Base Camp (5,350 m)), a 120 km desert crossing in 2025, and extended rests in Kazakhstan. He mostly walks roads but often takes mountain paths and camps in a tent, sometimes staying with locals. Funding is unclear but likely supported by earnings from his large YouTube and Instagram followings. Campbell previously completed long trails such as the Colorado Trail (800 km), the Great Himalayan Trail (1,600 km), and the Flinders Ranges near Sydney (3,750 km).
