Modern Jazz Pioneer Maria Schneider to Give First Korea Concert Next Month

Maria Schneider, a Grammy-winning composer and arranger, will make her debut visit to Korea on the 31st of next month, performing at Lotte Concert Hall with her 19-piece jazz orchestra. Born in Minnesota in 1960 and trained at Eastman and the University of Miami, Schneider moved to New York in 1985 and worked with jazz legends Gil Evans and Bob Brookmeyer. She founded the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra in 1992 and developed a distinctive sound by expanding big-band traditions into intricate, harmony-rich “3D soundscapes” that evoke nature and human reflection. Schneider’s ensembles of 18–20 players are praised for functioning as unified organic bodies; she has guest-conducted over 85 ensembles in more than 30 countries and collaborated across genres with artists like Sting and on David Bowie’s final album, Black Star. A seven-time Grammy winner across jazz and classical categories, Schneider also co-founded the crowdfunding platform ArtistShare in 2004 to work directly with fans—many of her recordings are only available via ArtistShare or her official site rather than common streaming services. The upcoming concert will feature her original orchestra of top New York jazz musicians who have performed her work for more than two decades.
