The Daejeon Fire Department will inspect 753 lodging facilities through July 17 to prevent fires before the summer vacation season. Officials will check maintenance of fire and evacuation systems at sites that caused casualties in the last five years and require corrections for any violations. Inspectors will also evaluate fire engine access in dense lodging areas, availability of alternate routes, and water supply management for firefighting. In the past five years the city recorded 39 lodging fires with 14 casualties (3 deaths, 11 injuries); motels and yeogwan (traditional small inns) accounted for 69.3% of fires and 85.7% of casualties. Fire Chief Kim Mun-yong stressed that rigorous pre-checks are vital because fires in facilities used by many people can lead to large-scale casualties.
