Lower Fuel Surcharges and Ceasefire Boost Overseas Travel Demand to Europe and the Americas

As summer vacation season approaches, easing tensions in the Middle East and two consecutive drops in international fuel surcharges have revived demand for long-haul trips from South Korea. Major travel agencies report a surge in bookings—some up 30–41%—especially for Europe and Southeast Asia; France, the U.S., and Vietnam saw notable increases. Fuel surcharges for international flights will fall by eight steps next month after peaking in May, cutting costs on routes like New York by about 230,000 won one-way (around 440,000 won round-trip compared with two months ago). Travel companies are launching summer promotions, coupon packs, mileage giveaways, and expanded long-haul packages (e.g., a charter to Marseille, U.S. West Coast education tours, and air+hotel packages) to capture the season’s demand. They expect further growth through summer and the Chuseok holiday as airlines add capacity and new routes.
