Lavender Fields Turn Goseong Violet: Hanui Lavender Farm Festival Draws Visitors

Hanui Lavender Farm in Goseong, Gangwon Province, is hosting its 19th annual Lavender Festival through June 28. Stretching over about 40,000 m², the farm was transformed from wasteland since 2006 into layered themed gardens—including English Garden, Palette Garden, and hydrangea (수국) garden—featuring large lavender fields, red poppies, rye fields, and a metasequoia forest. Even the road to the farm is painted purple, and many on-site signs, safety ropes and even soap are purple, creating an immersive “purple” atmosphere. Owner Ha Deok-ho encourages visitors to take in the full landscape—the lavender hills, the contrasting red poppy field and surrounding mountains—for the best views. Popular festival activities include lavender classes, perfume extraction, planting take-home lavender, making lavender oil/water products, and playful events like a slipper-throwing contest. A must-try is the farm’s lavender ice cream, lightly perfumed and currently on discount due to a lighter-than-usual bloom. The festival runs daily until June 28; the farm remains open through October 18 and will host an autumn flower event later in the year.
