K-pop Goes Global While Korean Music Platforms Remain Domestic

Domestic Korean streaming platforms are struggling as K-pop consumption shifts overseas. Major entertainment companies (HYBE, SM, JYP, YG) now generate over 60% of revenue from abroad, but local platforms like Genie (18% overseas), Flo (2%), and Bugs (0%) have minimal global presence. Barriers such as Korean-language interfaces, Korea-only phone or payment verification, and app availability limit foreign access. This gap contributes to a decoupling between domestic charts and global charts: songs that trend quickly on Spotify and Apple Music often climb Korean charts much later, reducing exposure on local platforms for global hits. Age differences in platform use deepen the divide—younger listeners prefer Spotify/Apple/YouTube Music while older listeners favor Melon, which can skew domestic charts toward ballads and trot favored by older demographics. Experts say domestic services must adopt features that reflect global music-consumption trends (e.g., discovery, high-quality listening, short-form integration, fan community functions) rather than only offering streaming, to attract international K-pop fans.
