DIMF Opens with Modernized 'Turandot' Aiming for Global Stages

The Daegu International Musical Festival (DIMF) opened with its own adaptation of Puccini's Turandot, reimagined as a modern, sleek kingdom and performed in Korean. The 20th DIMF runs until July 6 with 35 works across 122 performances. Directors including Robert Alföldi, who staged the Slovak licensed production, focused on simplified staging and the characters’ inner lives to highlight themes of loneliness and love. Returning leads Lisa and Lee Geon-myung join newcomer Kim Bo-kyung; Lee said this revival emphasizes modernity over the original’s classical, East-Asian aesthetic (East-Asian refers to cultural elements inspired by historic China and neighboring regions). DIMF chair Bae Seong-hyuk said the festival will upgrade the production further with the goal of taking the musical to Broadway and the West End.
