“Silent Companions: Kim Chang-wan’s Paintings Offer Quiet Comfort”

Kim Chang-wan, a veteran musician, actor and broadcaster, is holding a solo art exhibition “Someone’s Side” at Gallery Soyeon in Seoul through the 24th. The show, which began after his participation in a 2022 group exhibition, features works that aim to be silent companions to people living with unease. Pieces range from the energetic, primary-colored “Rock Festival” (inspired by his headlining performance at the Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival) to the stark, intimate black-and-white portrait “Persistent Longing” (also used as an album jacket for “I Am an Earthling”). Kim, who has long painted his own album covers since his 1977 debut with Sanulrim, began exhibiting seriously after encouragement from artist Hwang Ju-ri. Now nearing his 50th anniversary in music, he continues to connect with audiences across generations; Gallery Soyeon notes many young visitors are attending the show. Selected works will also appear at the Seoul Art Salon 2026 at the Shilla Hotel. Kim remains active in media, filming a new drama and hosting SBS LoveFM’s evening program, where his daily, handwritten opening lines echo the exhibition’s quiet message of presence and comfort.
