Government to Import More Fresh Eggs as Prices Stay High

South Korea’s Ministry of Agriculture plans to expand imports of fresh eggs to ease rising retail prices. About 21.12 million US- and Thailand-sourced eggs will be supplied by July, with 1.12 million US eggs arriving at major supermarkets this weekend and weekly shipments of at least 4.48 million thereafter. The ministry is also considering further increases in import volumes and extending tariff relief on processed egg products (할당관세) from June to December and raising the quota from 4,000t to 8,000t. Egg prices rose 9.3% year-on-year in mid-June (30-count XL pack), driven by last winter’s culling from highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) and changes in layer hen management. Domestic daily production is recovering and is expected to reach about 49 million eggs in July, but officials warn it will take time for higher production to fully ease market supply and prices. The government will combine imports with subsidy programs and lower cooperative purchase prices to support households and farmers.
